The Architecture Department started its journey in the year 1965 as a constituent department in the Engineering faculty with fifteen students and Prof. Amiya Banerjee as the Head of the Department. In the course of time, the department was enriched with the contribution of several illustrious teachers and visiting professionals of international repute, who helped the department move from strength to strength. Today, the 1000 strong alumni are serving the profession and academics throughout the world.

At the time of its inception, it offered undergraduate course in Architecture and eventually included post graduate studies in Urban Design and Housing in the year 1981. At present, post graduation is awarded only in Urban Design. Other than these, the department offers doctoral program and around 40 scholars are currently pursuing their PhD research under the supervision of departmental faculty members. The department also carries out research activities in several emergent areas through research grants and funded projects.

In the professional arena, the department is equipped with expertise in the fields of Architectural Design Theory, Urban Design, Planning, Architectural Acoustics, Architectural Conservation and Landscape Architecture. It extends professional consultancy services to both public and private sectors. The department is also strongly committed towards community outreach programs and several faculty members are engaged in such services in their individual capacities.

The students of the department have their own organization named Students Society of Architecture, Jadavpur University (SSAJU) that was formed to extend financial support to needy students, especially for their final year thesis assignments and have helped many a student so far. The students regularly participate in diverse extra-curricular activities like quiz contests/ architectural competitions/ design workshops/ cultural fests etc. and display remarkable consistency in winning titles /awards in both individual as well as group categories.
This year, the department is celebrating its 50-years milestone along-with the Diamond Jubilee of our University.
