Center for Computer Aided Design Centre (CAD)

The Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Centre was founded in the year 1985 and is known to be one of the pioneering institutions of eastern India to empower individuals to challenge conventional thinking in pursuit of original innovative ideas. The Centre functions under the Faculty Council of Engineering & Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. We host a wide array of courses and certifications and do provide placement assistance and career planning tools to help students get the most from their education in the emerging areas that it embraces. The Courses are carefully structured and oriented to build not only a strong theoretical foundation but also hands-on training of real-life scenarios faced in the work environment. In a nutshell, the CAD center offers skill development, research, and capacity building in emerging technologies like CAD / STAAD, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Multimedia & Animation, Computer Programming, and Digital Security with a positive learning experience. Under the guidance of renowned administrators, directors, and faculties, our research and training services in 2020 marked its 35 years of excellence. We are driven to dig deeper to design comprehensive courses with updated industry-relevant curriculum, high-end infrastructure with fully-equipped laboratories to ensure that our students get job-ready for lucrative and satisfying careers with technological advancement. A large group of certified professionals, academicians, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students from CAD Centre are now at key positions at various esteemed organizations all around the globe.

About

The 1980’s saw the electronics and computer revolution reaching the shores of India. A major player in this field was the Govt. of India, through its specialized agencies—the Electronics Commission and the Dept. of Electronics (DOE). DOE decided to establish national CAD Centres with four geographical regions as the focal points for promoting CAD activities in India. The centers were established and funded jointly by DOE, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Eastern Regional Centre of the aforesaid program was established at Jadavpur University, one of the pioneering institutions in Eastern India, and started functioning in the year 1985-86. The Centre has recently broadened its spectrum of specialization, in addition to CAD and related activities, by including frontier technologies like:

  • Geoinformatics
  • Multimedia & Animation Computer Programming
  • Cyber Security & Forensics

Objective

During the mid-’80s, the awareness in the field of CAD/CAM was at its infancy. Few educators and researchers with limited expertise in this specialized field were available and the situation in the industry was even worse. This dearth was rewarded by establishing nationwide four CAD Centres and the Eastern Regional Centre was decided to be housed at Jadavpur University. The main objective behind setting up this center was creating awareness in the fields of CAD, CAM, and CAE, eventually expanding to Geoinformatics/Multimedia/Computer Programming/Cyber Security; and promoting activities in these spectra by organizing workshops, short-term courses, and through consultancies.

Facilities Available

The CAD Centre of Jadavpur University was equipped with a Norsk Data (ND-560CX) Supermini Computer System when the Centre started functioning in the year 1986. Currently, CAD Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities to support offline and online technology and knowledge transfer to train professionals. There are three modern and well-equipped laboratories that serve the requirement of regular lab classes as well as software projects.   At present, there are 60 numbers of Core I7 based PCs and a server connected in a LAN environment.   Three well-furnished and air-conditioned classrooms provide an excellent ambiance for theoretical classes. The classrooms are equipped with multimedia projectors for demonstration.   Software packages on CAD, GIS, DIP, Multimedia, DBMS, and the Programming packages are stored in the central server and can be accessed from any of the PCs through the LAN.   The Centre has industry-grade instruments like geodetic survey-grade RTK GNSS receivers, drones for remote sensing/photogrammetry, and digital photogrammetry workstations.   The Centre also houses a rich library.

Achievements

During the initial phase, the major thrust was to create awareness on CAD methodologies for industry personnel, researchers as well as faculty members. The computing facilities including structural analysis software and other CAD-related packages were made available to the registered users.     It also offered numerous short-term courses in various emerging fields since its inception; and has trained more than 10000 researchers, academicians, professionals, and students in various technological fields, who have been successful in implementing their training to their work areas.     Our students are working in many esteemed Government and private organizations, even abroad.     A number of projects from the industry have also been successfully completed.     The center has arranged many workshops, seminars, conferences, and corporate training in its areas of expertise.     During the last 35 years, it has remained the most prestigious institution in Eastern India for promoting CAD and Geoinformatics-related activities. The contribution of CAD Centre in the field of Geoinformatics has been recognized in 2020 by the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (Kolkata chapter), the oldest Geoinformatics community of India, closely associated with ISRO and IIRS. The Centre is associated as a Coordinator Institute with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, ISRO, Dept. of Space, GOI in their OFF-CAMPUS OUTREACH CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES.
