Center for Knowledge Based Systems

About

The Centre for Knowledge Based Systems (CKBS) was established in 1987 with funding from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Subsequently the activities of the Centre have been sustained with grants from AICTE and UGC, as well as collaborative projects and consultancy from Aeronautical Development Agency (Ministry of Defence), Bangalore and industrial establishments.

The original objectives of the Centre were to provide infrastructural facilities for, and to carry out research in, the applicable aspects of Artificial Intelligence, with special focus on Expert Systems, Logic Programming, Neural Network and Fuzzy Systems.

Towards this goal, the Centre has
• established a modest collection of books and publications.
• established computing facilities with Expert System development tools.
• organised a number of short courses on Knowledge Based Systems, Expert System, Logic Programming, Software Engineering. The courses were attended by participants from industry and educational institutions all over India.
• organised regular Saturday colloquia on weekly / monthly basis till 1999 on Cognitive Science, Mathematical Logic, Medical Application of Expert Systems, Artificial Neural Network and Fuzzy Systems in association with other schools and departments of the University and the Calcutta Logic Circle.
• carried out research, and published papers and reports, on classificatory Expert Systems, Artificial Neural Network Application for Drug Design, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Fuzzy Systems and Expert System for design of CFB boilers.

With the worldwide shift of focus and priorities in Artificial Intelligence, the Centre for Knowledge Based Systems refocussed its objectives to suit the requirements of Indian industry and research establishments. The objective of the Centre was therefore redefined as “Knowledge Enriched Computer Applications”.

With the existing expertise of the members in Aerospace & Real-time Software Systems, the Centre participated in the following activities:
• Independent verification and validation of Flight Control Law Software for Indian Light Combat Aircraft. (Total grant: Rs. 40 Lakhs).
• Independent audit, verification and validation of Safety Critical Railway Signalling Software (Consultancy for three different projects).
• Knowledge Based Pump Selection Software for a well-known pump manufacturer (Consultancy).
• Range Safety Expert System Development for Interim Test Range (Technical support).
• Technical support to DRDO Laboratories in the form of review leadership and participation.
o Pre-flight review and post-flight analysis of aerospace vehicles.

Research Areas

  Estimation and Filtering Techniques, Fault Detection and Identification of Nonlinear Hybrid Systems, Real Time Computer Control Systems, Safety Critical and High Consequence Software, Design Review and Audit of Aero Engine Control System, Aircraft Stabilization, Railway Signaling and Interlocking Systems.

Facilities Available

  Dedicated furnished floor space consisting of the entire second floor of Jupiter Building (Main) including an air-conditioned seminar room & library, faculty offices, store-room and two air-conditioned laboratory spaces for computers. Desktop Computers, projection system, computer furniture, network with Ethernet and Wi-Fi facilities.

Achievements

    LCA: The Flight Control System of the LCA-Tejas for which the CKBS provided independent design review and validation has performed to the full satisfaction of the pilots, already two squadrons of which have been operated by the Indian Air Force. The contribution of the CKBS has been recognised in the form of awarding the DRDO Academy Excellence Award to Prof. Tapan Kumar Ghoshal (as the leader of the IV&V team) for evolving processes for independent verification and validation of control laws for the Indian Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).    K9+ Turbo Fan Engine (Kaveri) and C4 Core Engine (Kabini): Control systems for the K9+ turbofan engine and the C4 core engine which received technical support from CKBS have undergone tests on the ground and onboard test aircraft in Russia. The control system reportedly performed satisfactorily.    UFSBI: The CKBS team independently audited and verified the safety-critical railway signal system UFSBI (two different designs). These UFSBI systems are being operated in many stations in the Indian Railways.    Publications: Members of the CKBS have published more than 90 papers in reputed international and national journals and conferences. Numerous technical reports arising out of the sponsored projects have also been generated.    Infrastructural Research Support for PhD and Masters Students: Since its inception, the CKBS laboratory has provided infrastructural research support for 9 PhD scholars and about 45 Masters's students.    Independent verification and validation of Flight Control Law Software for Indian Light Combat Aircraft, funded by Aeronautical Development Agency, Bangalore, (Total grant for the three phases of the project: Rs. 40 Lakhs)    Design and Review of Control Law of Kaveri Engine (Phase-I) funded by GTRE Bangalore, Rs 21.60 Lakhs.    Design Review and Audit of K9+ Engine Control Law, funded by GTRE, Bangalore, Rs. 23.00 lakhs.    Particle filter Application in Target Tracking and Navigation, funded by Aeronautics Research & Development Board, New Delhi, Rs. 8.52 lakhs.    Non-Classical Estimation Techniques for homing interceptor guidance (as a component of the coordinated multi-institutional research project “Tracking of Ballistic Aerospace Targets” carried out by IIT Kharagpur, B.E.S.U and Jadavpur University), funded by DRDL, Hyderabad, Rs. 31.02 lakhs.    Fault Detection and Identification for Nonlinear Hybrid Plants, funded by Advanced Systems Laboratory, DRDO, Hyderabad, Rs 9.3 Lakhs.
