The School aims to impart education at the postgraduate level to students having diverse backgrounds in science and engineering. The School also offers a post-graduate diploma course to working professionals from the industry. The School of Environmental Studies conducts research on current environmental issues and thereby trains students by offering PhD degrees. Some of the current areas of interest are microbial diversity, bioconversion of waste materials, intertidal biofilms, marine sponge pathogenesis, groundwater arsenic and fluoride contamination, metal biogeochemistry, air pollution and climate change. The School, in its interdisciplinary characteristic, regularly interacts with the Civil, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering as well as with Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biotechnology and Economics departments of Jadavpur University through its teaching and research programmes. The School of Environmental Studies had previous collaborations with the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (Germany), Australian Institute of Marine Science (Australia), McMaster University (Canada) and now has active collaborations with Nanyang Technical University (Singapore), National University of Singapore and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and Leibniz Center for Marine Tropical Research (Germany). The postgraduate students of the School mostly take up PhD positions in the IITs and other national institutes. The PhD students pursued their further careers in reputed institutions such as Max Planck Institute, Harvard University, Nanyang Technological University, Indian Institute of Petroleum as well as leading industry houses.

A brief history

The School was founded in 1989 by Late Dr. Dipankar Chakraborti. His research group highlighted the arsenic groundwater problem in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Jadavpur University was the first University in West Bengal to offer M. Phil. in Environmental Science as an evening course in 1985. This course was restructured in 2001 as a day course by Late Prof. Utpal Kumar De. The current M. Tech. course is being offered since 2011.

Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University is the Chairman of the School. Currently the School is under the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Law & Management with the Dean of the faculty. Prof. Joydeep Mukherjee is the current Director of the School.
