The Department of History at Jadavpur University was established in August 1956 as a consequence of the special importance attached to the history of humankind with special reference to India’s past by the National Council of Education. Prof. Nemai Sadhan Bose, Prof. Sushobhan Sarkar, Prof. Jagadish Narayan Sarkar, Prof. Sipra Sarkar, Prof. A.C. Banerjee, Prof. Indrani Ray, Prof. Ratnalekha Ray, Prof. Amalendu De, Prof. Chittabrata Palit, Prof. Himadri Banerjee and other eminent historians taught in this department. With a commitment to academic excellence, the department offers a diverse range of courses and research opportunities for students. The department has played a significant role in developing research frameworks in the fields of colonial and post-independence, ancient and medieval, early modern and modern, intellectual and environmental, cultural and gender history. Histories of science and technology, refugees, caste, urbanisation, military formations, health, food, architecture, anti-imperialism, surveillance and class have also received attention in a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment. The history faculty members have introduced various teaching innovations to generate enthusiasm among the students. Numerous extension lectures, invited seminar lectures and exciting conferences have been organised. Over the years, leading historians from India and scholars from abroad have graced these occasions.Eminent scholars and professors who have left an indelible mark on the academic landscape of the department include Prof. S.K.Maity, Prof. Amitabh Mukhopadhyay, Prof. Anil Chandra Bannerjee, Prof. Jagdish Narayan Sarkar, Prof. Pranjal Kumar Bhattacharya, Prof. Ratnalekha Ray, Prof. Papiya Chakraborty, Prof. Deboprasad Choudhury, Prof. Sukla Das, Prof. Anuradha Chanda and Prof. Bimalkanti Ghosh. They have inspired generations of students.

Central to the department’s mission is its library, which serves as a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Housing a wealth of secondary and primary sources, it provides students with the necessary tools to delve into the annals of the past and uncover untold narratives. In this repository of knowledge, students find information and inspiration, as they embark on their own academic journeys. The department boasts a specialised centre for European studies, complemented by a plethora of publications and collaborative research initiatives. Scholar exchange programs further enrich the academic landscape, fostering a global perspective. Through a series of national and international seminars, the department cultivates a vibrant atmosphere for scholarly discourse across various historical domains. The private papers in our custody contain letters, postcards, zamindari, legal documents, pamphlets, memorabilia, and photographs.
