The Department of Information Technology at Jadavpur University was started as a full-fledged department in 2001. The Department first started with the course Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology with an intake capacity of 40 students in 2001. The intake capacity increased several times resulting in the present intake capacity of 86. Later, post-graduate level course “Master of Software Engineering” was introduced as both day course (2-year) and evening course (3-year) in the year 2002 and 2004 respectively.

Because the course curriculum is the backbone through which the Vision and Mission of the Department are realized, the curriculum has been very carefully developed to earn global recognition and produce successful Information Technology graduates. On one hand, the curriculum is intended to impart state-of-the-art enabling technologies in secure intelligent distributed software technology; while on the other hand, it is expected to generate professional engineers for sustainable and inclusive development of the society.
The Department attempts to create an environment where students and teachers can innovate and apply their creativity for solving real-world problems. All faculty members are committed to research and project-oriented activities. Moreover, over the past 20 years, both the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department have been coming up with different innovative ideas.
The department has a rich history in terms of the achievements of the past students. The success rates of students in their career goals and in securing internship training are quite high. Some so many students performed excellently in higher studies in various reputed universities all over the world. On the other hand, many students have been performing excellently in their professional. Moreover, many students of the department have established themselves as successful entrepreneurs.
For the last three years, the average percentage of students securing jobs through campus interviews across the Faculty of Engineering & Technology is about 81%. In the same period, about 80% of the students opting for GATE successfully clear the exam. The percentage of students clearing GATE and joining jobs at PSUs or higher studies is about 25% on average. Apart from these two major avenues students also regularly joins higher studies in management institutions through CAT, moves abroad for postgraduate study and research through GRE, GMAT and other European fellowships and joins central and state govt services through ESE and state-level examinations.
The department is also proud of setting up our own “Code Club JUSL”, which is a design and coding club organized by the students and for the students. This club was eventually formed in the 2018 time frame and started its work in the most innovative way.

The undergraduate program is NBA accredited for the academic years 2023 – 2024 to 2025 – 2026 (up to 30.06.2026)
