The development was established in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree course in Library Science, which was converted into a bachelor’s degree course in Library and Information Science in 1979. This was the second Library and Information Science department in the state, the first being that of Calcutta University started in 1945. The department started with a small classroom and a room for the Head of the Department in the integrated Building. The department was initially headed by Prof. Ajit Kumar Mukherjee, Mukundalal Chakraborty. Others who helped in running the academic programme of the department as part-time teachers, in the beginning, were late Dr. Aditya Kumar Ohdedar, former Chief Librarian of the University; late Amitya Kumar Roy, former Assistant Librarian, National Library; late Bimalendu Majumder, former Librarian, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture and Prof. Prabir Roychaudhury, the then a library professional at the Central Library of the University, who later joined the department as a full-time teacher in 1966. The expansion of the department started in the 1970s with the addition of two more teachers, viz. late Prof. Mangala Prasad Sinha, and Prof. Bijoypada Mookerjee. At that time late Prof. Phani Bushan Roy and late Prof. Bijayanath Mukhopadhyay were the gust teachers. During the 1980s four more teachers joined the department, viz. Prof. Ramkrishna Saha, Prof. Amitabha Chatterjee, Prof. Pinaki Nath Mukharjee and Prof. SubalChandra Biswas. This is the decade in which the department started two more courses in quick succession: a part-time bachelor’s degree course (18 months duration) for working library professionals in January 1984 and a full-time master’s degree course in August the same year. The computer laboratory in the department was established in 1988 with the special assistance received from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.
