Jadavpur University born in 1955 has a short but glorious history. Having its origin from National Council of Education, Bengal, it has a chequered career where in the concept of indigenous system of education free from the clutches of British rulers and serving the interest of local people took shape and ultimately through various stages culminated in the development of the present University in 1955. NACC has accreditated Jadavpur University with grade and has identified as one of the five Universities of the country as a centre of potential for excellence.

Department of Physical Education is a constituent unit of Jadavpur University. It is the one of the academic departments under the faculty of Arts. This Department previously as a unit of Jadavpur Vidyapith College of Education, run by NCE, Bengal, started offering B.P.Ed program from the year 1975 at the request of the Director of Public Instruction, West-Bengal when Physical Education was made a compulsory examination subject. Thereafter in 1990, Jadavpur University has taken over the Physical Education Unit of Jadavpur Vidyapith College of Education and has made a full-fledged department of Physical Education under the Faculty of Arts.

The teacher education programme is controlled by the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) as the parent body. All the teachers education programmes should be recognised by the Parent Body (NCTE) like other teachers education programmes in India. Jadavpur University is also recognised with its two courses of two years duration B.P.Ed. and M.P.Ed. And these two courses have already been recognised by NCTE, with an annual intake of 50 and 40 respectively.
