Department of Power Engineering aims at imparting fundamental and applied knowledge in the interdisciplinary areas of power generation, storage, transmission and distribution at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. It aspires to emerge as a globally recognized department in imparting quality education to produce successful power engineers. Its undergraduate course is NBA-accredited. The department is also a UGC-SAP and DST-FIST supported one. The faculty pool is internationally recognized for their contribution in the field of power and energy. The department also boasts of a network of distinguished alumni spanning across academia and industry.

About

The Department was established under the name of Power Plant Engineering in the year 1989 at the Salt Lake Campus of the University with a mission to produce specialized engineers in the field of power generation, transmission and distribution. Since the year 2003, it has been renamed as Power Engineering Department. It is a UGC-SAP and DST-FIST-supported department. Today, the Department offers both Bachelor of Power Engineering and Master of Power Engineering courses with student intakes of 43 and 18, respectively. The Department also runs a PhD program under the FET. The undergraduate course is NBA-accredited, and it offers a diverse and interdisciplinary coverage of relevant mechanical and electrical engineering subjects, and specialized topics on thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable/non-conventional power generations. The program also emphasizes on industrial visits for practical training in operating power plants. The postgraduate course offers several elective subjects on advanced topics on power generation, storage, transmission and distribution, besides offering several interdisciplinary papers related to power engineering.

The Department boasts of an excellent faculty pool with rich and diverse backgrounds in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and power engineering. Several laboratories with modern equipment, a huge workshop and an impressive computational facility for the students, faculty members and research scholars are the key to the active teaching and research environment of this small, but vibrant department. The Department has run research projects with grants from various funding agencies including DST, UGC, ISRO, BRNS-DAE, DRDO etc. Faculty members also engage themselves in applied research and industrial consultancies. The department boasts of a distinguished alumni pool spanning across academia and industry. Faculty members of the department have established collaboration at both national and international levels with leading academic institutes, research organizations and industry houses.
