Printing engineering as a full-fledged engineering discipline was not identified for long in India. Foreseeing the growth in media engineering and assessing the market demand back in 1988, the department of printing engineering was established under the leadership of Prof. Ashok Mukhopadhyay, the founder head of the department. During the commencement of the undergraduate course named Bachelor in Printing Engineering, the student strength was only 10 and then in different phases it has been increased and currently the strength in undergraduate level is 37. In 2013 the department started offering the postgraduate course named Master of Technology in Printing Engineering and Graphic Communication with the sanctioned strength of 10. The department also offers Ph.D. programme.
In both the undergraduate ad post-graduate levels the course is truly interdisciplinary in nature. These include subjects covering core areas of graphic communication and packaging like printing processes, printing materials, color science, printing quality control, packaging techniques, digital printing and pre-media creation along with the subjects like computer programming, database management, networking technologies. Such a multidisciplinary nature helps employment of our students in diverse fields. Apart from knowledge transfer from the distinguished faculty members the different laboratories also provide hands on experience towards competitive development of the students’ career.
The department is actively engaged in the research works. Some of major research areas include printing process, printing materials, printing quality control, coating science, color science, packaging techniques, digital image processing, computer vision and process optimization.
