The machine age, backed by all-pervading scientific ideas, brought in new dimensions in technology, ushering welfares to mankind. Pragmatic attention to the area of Production Engineering started nucleating only in the early decades of the last century. F.W. Taylor laid the foundation of Production studies compatible with scientific attitudes of physical or natural sciences and gave birth to the entire domain of “Production Engineering” by coupling “Scientist Management” to the “Man-Machine” Unit.
It is a multidisciplinary integrated study dealing with the process, methodologies and management in transforming and trans-shaping technologically a given set of inputs; into a set of desired and dedicable outputs based on synergic concepts through the optimum utilization of human resources, goods and services.
Production engineering coordinates the search for knowledge in a rational manner cutting across the entire spectrum of integrated management and processing activities to attain optimal economic objectives of sufficiency, yet disciplined use through a strategy of increased productivity along with ensured quality and quantity.
Internationally famous researcher and academician Late Prof Amitabha Bhattacharyya was the founder of this department and it took birth in the year 1980. Production Engineering Department is a pioneering Centre for learning Manufacturing Sciences and Management in the academic map of India. The department is having a very good track record in respect of the employment of the students. The majority of the students are getting jobs in reputed companies and many of them even are getting more than one job from campus interview itself. Due to its excellent performance in teaching, students from different countries (Jordon, Iraq, Netherland etc) are coming to this department for perusing their higher studies. Nevertheless, students from this department are also going abroad for higher studies under the student exchange program of the University. This department is having an exceptional track record in the field of R&D and in fact as per the Scopus database, research performance (in terms of publication per faculty and citation per faculty) is among the top-ranking departments considering all Mechanical, Manufacturing, Production & Industrial Engg Departments of different leading IITs and Universities of our nation.
Due to excellent performance in teaching and research, UGC was granted DSA funding in the year 1983. The success in achieving the goals of DSA leads to sanctioning COSIST grant of UGC in 1987. Finally due to its outstanding contribution in the field of manufacturing the department was recognized by UGC as Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in the year 1993. Apart from this prestigious award, in the year 2001 DST, GOI provided significant financial support to this department under its FIST program and in 2002, Department also received a grant from AICTE under the MODROB scheme.
Besides this many faculties are running several individual projects funded by DST, BARC, AR&DB, CSIR and other funding agencies. All these aspects reflect the confidence of the various funding agencies in the activities of the Production Engineering Department towards fulfilling the objectives of becoming a true centre of learning.
