Centre For Advanced Study (UGC sponsored)

Department of Sanskrit JU was upgraded from DSA to this prestigious Centre for Advanced Study in 2005 (Phase I) for 5 years (with Prof. Bijoya Goswami as Coordinator and Prof. Lalita Sengupta as Joint Coordinator). The 5-year second phase was received w.e.f.2013 (with Prof. Debarchana Sarkar as Coordinator and Prof. Tapan Sankar Bhattacharyya as Joint Coordinator ). The Centre could not take up any activities during 2013-14 owing to considerable delay in release of funds from UGC. In both phases it organized national seminars, workshops, invited several eminent national and international scholars as Visiting Fellows, undertook several individual and joint projects.

In addition to the above activities stated under Short Summary, the Centre appointed Project Fellows and Project Assistants in both phases, held Advisory Committee Meetings annually in both phases, took up fieldworks in both phases, purchased equipment in the first phase. Though granted on paper, no funds were released in the 2nd Phase for equipment or as building grant as a result of which the Centre was unable to take up any activity related to these matters. As the second phase ended in March 2018, the Centre has ceased to exist from April 2018.

• The Projects undertaken followed the thrust areas of research specified by the UGC in the grant, viz. Literature, Grammar, Epigraphy, Dharmashastra, Philosophy etc.
