The School of Energy Studies at Jadavpur University was founded in 1984 as an inter-disciplinary School and initiated its activities in Energy Research. Since then the research activities are directed towards multi disciplinary approach involving various departments with in the university structure. The major thrust areas of the research activities are concentrated in the field of Renewable Energy, Integrated Energy Systems, and Energy Conservation.
Subsequently it immerged as an academic unit and from 1995 it started the M.Tech. Programme in Energy Science and Technology under the faculty of Engineering & Technology, with approval from All India Council for Technical Education, University Grants Commission and Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Presently the School of Energy Studies, under the faculty of Inter-disciplinary Studies, Law & Management, is offering a full time 4 semesters M.Tech. programme in Energy Science & Technology under Faculty of Engineering & Technology of Jadavpur University.
The School has several research groups in the field of Solar Photovoltaic, Solar Thermal, Wind Energy, Bio Energy, Energy Conservation & Management, and Building Energy Management. These groups are normally coordinating research activities with in the university frame work and in addition it is also coordinating collaborated research activities with other institutes both in India and other countries.
Presently the School of Energy Studies, under the faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Law & Management, is offering a full time 4 semesters M.Tech. Programme in Energy Science & Technology under Faculty of Engineering & Technology of Jadavpur University.

Presently the School has Five (5) sanctioned core faculty members and 13 M.Tech student intakes per year. There is a number of PhDs. Scholars presently pursuing their PhD work in various fields of Energy under the university research programmes, CSIR programmes, etc. The School also initiates various funded research projects from funding authorities like UGC, DST, MNRE, AICTE, CSIR, DRDO, UKIERI etc. The school has also international collaborations with the University of Newcastle, UK University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, UK.
