School Of International Relations and Strategic Studies (SIRSS)

The School of International Relations and Strategic Studies was set up in 1987 to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to advanced study and research in the field of international relations and strategic studies. The School provides a forum for intellectual exchanges among the members of the three Faculties of the University. Since its inception, the School has promoted collaboration among scholars in analyzing problems having multi-disciplinary dimensions; in facilitating lectures, seminars and workshops; in funding research on issues of international concern.

About

The School of International Relations and Strategic Studies was set up in 1987. It currently functions under the directorship of Professor Amites Mukhopadhyay. The School aims to promote multidisciplinary research, serving as a forum that opens up the possibility of dialogue among academics, who otherwise would remain stepped in their discipline-based bounded nature of departmental research.

The School promotes research in International Relations and Strategic Studies which focuses on Methodologies of International Relations and Strategic Studies, Global Public Policy and Foreign Policy Analysis, Global Political Economy, Governance of Science and Technology Policies, Global Environmental Politics, Global Human Rights, and Human Security issues. It encourages researches into security issues in the Indian context, particularly the proliferation of nuclear weapons, globalization and its impact on India and India’s foreign trade policy.

    Round-Table Discussion on US Foreign Policy towards China: Implications for India, in June 2006. The discussants were Dr. Robert Sutter (Professor Georgetown University, U.S.A), Susan Shultz (Director, American Center), Mr. Sunil Mishra (Regional Director, CII), Prof. Ajitava Roychaudhury (Dept. of Economics, JU), Dr. Swaran Singh (Dept of International Relations, JNU) and Prof. Takhellambam Bhabanada (Manipur University).    A national seminar was organized in collaboration with the School of Energy Studies (JU) on Energy and Resource Security: Challenges for the 21st Century in March 2007. The seminar had speakers from the following institutions, the School of Energy Studies (JU), School of Oceanographic Studies (JU), School of Water Resources Engineering (JU), the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (GOI) and MAKAIAS-Kolkata.    A lecture was delivered by Prof. Hari Vasudevan (Dept. of History, Calcutta University) on Indo-Russian Relations Today: Lessons of the Nikitin Expeditions on 15th March 2007.    Mr. Robert Kaplan (a well-known US academic) delivered a talk on US Foreign Policy Overreach on 22nd June 2007.    Mr. Jerome Bonafont, the Ambassador of France in India delivered a talk on Indo-French Relations on 29th February 2008. The session was chaired by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Prof. Pradip Narayan Ghosh.    Dr. Sumantra Bose, Professor of Government, London School of Economics & Political Science delivered a talk on Ethnic Conflicts: A Comparative Study of Sri Lanka and Kashmir on 30th January 2009. The program was organized in collaboration with Indian Association for Asian and Pacific Studies (IAAPS), Kolkata.    Dr. Sumit Roy, Visiting Adjunct Fellow, SIRSS, made a presentation on his research project he has been pursuing under the School on 3rd March 2009. The title of the presentation was Globalisation and the ‘Emerging Giants’, China and India and their Economic Cooperation.    The School organized one Workshop on Contemporary Political Theory: Positivism and Beyond in collaboration with the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University and Council for Political Studies, Kolkata on 23rd March 2011.    The School, in collaboration with the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University organized the First Professor Jayantanuja Bandyopadhyay Memorial Lecture on 3rd November 2011. The lecture was on Foreign Policy in the Age of Transition: Two Asian Models delivered by Professor Radharaman Chakrabarti, former Vice-Chancellor, Netaji Subhas Open University.     A seminar on Studying Indian Political Thought through Texts: Reading M. N. Roy Today was organized by the School of International Relations and Strategic Studies, in collaboration with the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University and Council for Political Studies, Kolkata on October 5, 2012.    The School, in collaboration with the Department of International Relations, organized the Third Jayantanuja Bandyopadhyay Memorial Lecture on November 12, 2013. The lecture was delivered by Professor Sobhanlal Datta Gupta, S. N. Banerjee Professor of Political Science, University of Calcutta (Retired). The theme was: Democracy, Difference and the Politics of Reason.    The School organized a National Seminar on Post-Liberal Societies: Utopia, Illusion or Reality? under UGC—UPE II Program during March 20th and 21st, 2014.    The School has been conducting an annual workshop on Research Methods in International Relations and other related Social Sciences since 2016.    The School of International Relations and Strategic Studies held a joint seminar with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS) on August 28 and 29, 2017 on OBOR and the role of China in Asian affairs.    The School of International Relations and Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Netaji Institute for Asian Studies (NIAS) organized a two-day national seminar on Area Studies and International Relations during February 6-7, 2018.     The School in collaboration with Mahanirban Calcutta Research Group (MCRG) organized a panel discussion in November 2018 titled Refugee Crisis around the Mediterranean. The discussion was chaired by Professor Purusottam Bhattacharya, former Professor in the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University.    The School of International Relations and Strategic Studies under the RUSA 2.0: Studies in the Global South scheme organized an international conference on security challenges in the Global South: Traditional and Non-traditional Dimensions during 8-9 August, 2019.
