The School of Journalism and Mass Communication commenced its operations on April 1^st, 2026.

Jadavpur University has been involved in teaching and learning of Mass Communication for more than 35 years. The Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication was started under the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education and Extension in 1991. Before that, a Certificate Course on Mass Communication was also being offered. The Centre was converted into the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension in 2001. Under the said department, M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication has been offered since 2017. Research work in the field of Media and Communication had also commenced soon.

Considering the present scope of the field, the University decided to start a separate School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It has, undoubtedly, broadened the scope of meaningful intervention in the teaching and learning of Media and Communication and contextualised that with the changing media-scape. The School not only aims at introspecting Media and Communication pedagogy, but it also wants to build an active industry-academia partnership.
