The School of Languages and Linguistics (SLL) at Jadavpur University, was previously known as the School of Linguistics and Language Technology and later the School of Languages. Since our inception, SLL has been engaged in teaching, research and outreach activities in linguistics, languages; both Indian and foreign. In 2014, the SLL was placed under the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Law, and Management at Jadavpur University, further emphasizing its commitment to a multidisciplinary academic environment. The SLL conducts one of only two masters in Linguistics programs in the state that attracts students from a wide-variety of social, economic, linguistic and cultural background making it possible to foster an environment rife for interdisciplinary research in languages and linguistics.
The SLL has grown from offering language courses back in 1991 to a full-fledged interdisciplinary unit with multiple academic programs in linguistics; MA and PhD, and several certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma courses in languages, linguistics and functional and communicative English. Currently, the School offers a range of linguistics courses and 26 language courses, with around 350 students enrolling annually.
The SLL has a strong research environment and students, scholars and faculty are involved in various conferences; national and international throughout the year by way of being part of organizing committees, presentation of research papers, student mentoring, and building national and global collaborative networks.
The SLL is strongly involved in community outreach programs that deal with the significance of language and general education.
The school collaborates internationally, holding MoUs with institutions in countries like Portugal and Italy.
Its research areas span Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Computational Linguistics, and Language Documentation, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern linguistic studies. The school also publishes the Jadavpur Journal of Languages and Linguistics (JJLL).
