Brief Profile of the School
School of Oceanographic Studies Jadavpur University was set up in 1988 by the University Grants Commission with the objective of manpower training and multidisciplinary research on ocean sciences and technology. Presently, the School is under the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Law & Management, Jadavpur University, and is devoted to studying the oceanic processes and phenomena, especially in the near-shore regions that affect the life and livelihood of the coastal community.
Vision: To develop human resources which would contribute towards a sustainable earth through understanding the natural phenomena and potential of oceans and coastal ecosystems.
Mission: The School serves as a platform where post-graduates from varied disciplines are given a basic understanding of the oceanic and coastal processes. The primary aim is to produce passionate intellectual minds who can participate and contribute to mitigate climate impacts through research, innovation, and actions.
Primary Research thrust areas: Climate change impacts, micro level vulnerability assessment in coastal ecosystems, social-ecological systems (SESs), ecosystem services, climate adaptation, nature based solutions (NbS), livelihood, human migration, natural hazrads management, marine pollution, blue economy, blue carbon dynamics, estuarine biogeochemistry, marine water quality monitoring, and wetland dynamics. The school has international repute working in deltas and low lying coastal areas, through the involvement in multi-country research consortium like ESPA-Delta, Belmont Forum ‘Deltas’, DECCMA (deccma.com), and Living Deltas Hub (livingdeltas.org).
