Architecture
Starting its journey in the year 1965, this is one of the premier institutions of Architecture in India. It is part of Faculty of Engineering and Technology in Jadavpur University. It offers B.Arch, M.Arch (in Urban Design) and Ph.D. degree courses. Several illustrious teachers and visiting professionals of international repute are the strength of the department. The alumni are serving the profession and academics throughout the world. The department also carries out research activities in several emergent areas.
Chemical Engineering
The Chemical Engineering Department has completed hundred years of glorious journey in 2021. With the mentorship of an eminent scholar, Acharya P.C. Roy, and under the academic leadership of Prof. H. L. Roy and Prof. Baneswar Das, Chemical Engineering Education India has been introduced by this department. Being a part of the then Bengal Technical Institute, the predecessor of Jadavpur University, a structured Chemical Engineering course was offered for the first time in India by this department. This department is also one of the oldest departments in Chemical Engineering in the World. The department commemorated Diamond Jubilee in 1982 and Platinum Jubilee in 1996.
Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering started in the year of 1956. In the last 65 years, the department has earned a high reputation. Nearly 5000 graduates of this department are serving the profession today around the globe. Apart from teaching and research, symposia, short-term courses are provided. The department extends consultancy and testing services to the industry in different projects of national importance. The faculty members are known for their outstanding contributions to the discipline. A good number of Ph. D. students are working at present on different sponsored projects. At present, the department is involved in many prestigious projects as well as the department has sophisticated and computer-controlled highly profile laboratory facilities. Department also uses Flipped Classroom, where students are involved in collaborative activities, such as group projects and classroom discussions in-class time. Departmental faculty members also use different ICT based E-learning tools which enables a more active collaboration of students.
Computer Science & Engineering
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was established in 1988. Currently, the department offers a 4-year undergraduate program B.E in Computer Science & Engineering (BCSE), 2-year postgraduate program M.E in Computer Science & Engineering (MCSE), 2-year MCA program, 3-year postgraduate evening program M.Tech in Computer Technology (MTCT), and PhD programs.
Construction Engineering
Established in 1989 with the aim of imparting education to UG students in Construction Management, Construction Plant and Machinery, Concrete Technology, Materials & Process of Construction, Repair & Rehabilitation of Structures. It's now developing as a centre for soil, material & concrete testing.
Electrical Engineering
Previously belonging to the College of Engineering and Technology, N.C.E. Bengal, Electrical Engineering is one of the oldest departments of Jadavpur University being established in the year 1906. Over the years it has grown into a department of national repute and importance. All the time, during the past 40 years, the Department is contributing significantly in the relevant fields through the works of its teachers, research scholars, and in the professional fields by the students passing out. The Department has revamped and replenished its curriculum and course structure to keep pace with the present-day needs of the subjects, associated industries, and the country at large; The Department is basically centered around six different sectional laboratories which play the role of nuclei.
Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
This department was established (1957) shortly after the College of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur, was given recognition as a full-fledged university in the year 1955. It is one of the best teaching and research centres with a widespread reputation, both within and outside the country. Several students who have passed out successfully of this department are holding important positions at such prestigious organizations as NASA (U.S.A.), BEL, BARC, ISRO, DRDO, BSNL, NTPC, DVC, etc.
Food Technology & Bio-Chemical Engineering
In the sixties, the world was experiencing the wave of ‘green revolution’ entailed with a serious demand for extending science and technology in the fields of agriculture and preservation of food. To keep abreast with the needs of the day, Jadavpur University established the Department of Food Technology and Bio-Chem. Engineering in the year 1964. Now the department is offering 4 years BE and 2 years M.Tech Programm.
Information Technology
The fusion of digital communication, network technologies and software methodologies necessitates new skills and theoretical background. Consequently, a large number of trained professionals are required to meet the growing job market in the Information Technology sector. So, a new academic programme started at Jadavpur University in 2000. The programme became a full-fledged department in 2001. The undergraduate program is NBA accredited for the academic years 2023 – 2024 to 2025 – 2026 (up to 30.06.2026)
Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering
Established in the year 1966, this department is now functioning from the second campus of the University, at Salt Lake. The department at present is conducting one undergraduate & one postgraduate course. The undergraduate program is NBA accredited for the academic years 2023 – 2024 to 2025 – 2026 (up to 30.06.2026)
Mechanical Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 1906 as an integral part of National Council of Education (NCE) and it is, presently, one of the oldest Departments in the University. In 1955, after almost fifty years of its establishment, with the enactment of necessary legislation, Jadavpur University came into being and the Department became a part of it.
Metallurgical & Material Engineering
The department was established in 1966 for imparting excellent training to students as qualified engineers, dealing with the production and processing of metals and alloys including foundries, rolling mills and fabrication shops and to train qualified engineers for state of art technologies.
Pharmaceutical Technology
The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology was established in the year 1963, as the only one of its kind in Eastern India at that time. Currently, it is one of the pioneer institutions in Pharmaceutical education in India. It is centrally located and well-connected by road, rail and air. This Department was set up with a vision to create and disseminate knowledge for producing quality health care professionals with global standards. Now, it has well-equipped student and research laboratories with modern and sophisticated analytical as well as production instruments and equipment. The department has been organizing workshops, seminars, and specially invited lectures with the participation of experts from the field of academic institutions, research institutions, industries and regulatory authorities. The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology has extensive collaborations with several research grants from various funding agencies and consulting projects. It has built up excellent infrastructure and 'State of Art' facilities that empower the development of students in academia and research. The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology is continuously receiving several research grants from various central government funding agencies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and state funding bodies. A good number of research scholars and scientists are currently working under UGC, DST, AICTE, CSIR, ICMR, DBT and other funding agency programmes. The Department has also built up strong collaborations with numerous reputed institutes in India and abroad to execute good quality research. A good number of teachers have associated themselves with innovative work in this regard.
Power Engineering
Department of Power Engineering aims at imparting fundamental and applied knowledge in the interdisciplinary areas of power generation, storage, transmission and distribution at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. It aspires to emerge as a globally recognized department in imparting quality education to produce successful power engineers. Its undergraduate course is NBA-accredited. The department is also a UGC-SAP and DST-FIST supported one. The faculty pool is internationally recognized for their contribution in the field of power and energy. The department also boasts of a network of distinguished alumni spanning across academia and industry.
Printing Engineering
Department of Printing Engineering is one of the leading academic institutes offering courses in the engineering field of printing and packaging since 1988. It has evolved its course curriculum to match ever-growing industry demands. The wide coverage of the curriculum in undergraduate and postgraduate levels enables the students to explore diverse career path in industry and higher studies not only in the country but abroad as well.
Production Engineering
Internationally famous researcher and academician Late Prof. Amitabha Bhattacharyya founded this department in the year 1980. Prof. Bhattacharyya received the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar’ award in 1971. He was also the recipient of several other prestigious awards like ‘University Gold Medal’, “President of India’s prize”, “R N Mukherjee Gold Medal” and Chandra Prakash Memorial Prize. Prof. Bhattacharyya was a Fellow of the International Institution of Production Engineering Research (CIRP), the Indian National Academy of Engineers (FNAE), the Indian National Science Academy (FNA) and the National Academy of Science (FNASc) etc. In the year 1967, with the blessings of Prof G. C. Sen, he pioneered the All India Manufacturing Technology Design & Research Conference (AIMTDR). The Department of Production Engineering was established with B. Prod. E. degree course starting in 1978. Subsequently, M. Prod. E. degree was introduced in 1983. The Department has been recognized by the UGC and AICTE as QIP centres. From the very inception, the Department received several recognitions such as DSA, COSIST, CAS (Ph I, Ph- I, Ph III, Ph IV, Ph V), FIST and many others from UGC, DST, AR&DB, DRNS MHRD etc, for its potential and excellence in teaching and research activities. It grew to a pioneering centre of learning in Manufacturing Sciences and Production Management in the academic map of India.
