About

Dr. Ishan Chakraborty is an Assistant Professor at the Department of English, Jadavpur University. His Ph. D. thesis entitled “Sites (Sights) of Visibility and Invisibility in the Plays of Rabindranath Tagore” was supervised by Prof. Ananda Lal. He is a person with disability, and is a disability & queer rights activist. He is an active and zealous member of the NGO— Kolkata Society for the Empowerment of the Differently Abled (KSEDA).

    UG— Introduction to Poetry, Translation Studies, Close Reading, American Poetry.    PG— Translation: A Case Study of Tagore, Disability in Indian Literature, Literature and Marginality.

Research Interests

    Tagore Studies, Translation Studies, Critical Disability Studies, Performance Studies, American Literature, and 19th Century Bengali and English Literature.

Notable Activities

    Research Advisor, “Accessibility/Languages/Tech: Advancing language justice for persons with visual disabilities through accessible technologies”, co-designed by Whose Knowledge? in partnership with disability rights and language justice researchers, advocates and activists from South Asia, Currently funded by Whose Knowledge?; March 2023- December 2024.    Advisor and Discussant, “virtual language justice convenings”, convened by Foundation for a Just Society, New York, focused on political education and resource mobilization, June 2023-February 2024.    Contributed to the creation of the "Deep dive into Decolonizing Structured Data" report, created by Whose Knowledge?, Launched on October, 2023.    Contributed to the creation of the State of the Internet’s Languages Report [a joint initiative by Whose Knowledge?, the Oxford Internet Institute, and the Centre for Internet and Society (India)] as author, speaker and translation supervisor, according to the following details— (a) Contributed an article titled “Prantikatar Madhye Prantikata”. (b) Translated the Bangla article into English as: “Marginality Within Marginality”. (c) Supervised the Bangla translation of the State of the Internet’s Languages Report, which was launched on February 23, 2022. (d) Contributed an interview on “accessing Disability and Queerness Online in Bangla”. (e) Delivered a talk in Bangla on “Intersection of Disability and Queerness: The Question of Online Access and Language” at the launch programme held on February 23, 2022.    Consultant Editor of a report titled “Disability & STEM Education: Narratives of Diverse People in STEM With Disabilities” as part of Season-5 of TheLifeofScience.com in 2020.    Coordinator of the project entitled “Bodies of Difference: Pedagogies of the Marginal in the Global South”, Funded by RUSA 2.0; March 1, 2019- March 31, 2020.    Co-Principle investigator, “Free Audio Book Project”, Funded by Centre for Disability Studies and Rehabilitation, Jadavpur University; December 2017- March 2018.

    Abul Kashem Rahimuddin Samman by Information and Cultural Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal. Awarded on February 23, 2019.    Awarded Abritty Visharad by the Sarbabharatiya Sangeet o Sanskriti Parishad on March 8, 2019.     State award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in the category of “Role Model”, by the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. Awarded on December 3, 2019.
