Jadavpur University
Through the dedicated efforts of the Sports Board, the university cultivates a dynamic sports culture that complements its scholarly reputation. By promoting diverse athletic disciplines, it nurtures not only individual talent but also a collective sense of national pride and identity.
Jadavpur University actively engages in a wide spectrum of tournaments and championships, particularly those held under the auspices of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Our athletes consistently strive for excellence, earning accolades at the university, state, national, and international levels—including prestigious platforms such as the Khelo India University Games and the World University Games.
Each academic year, approximately 200 student-athletes participate in nearly 30 indoor and outdoor sports disciplines, under the expert mentorship of part-time coaches and dedicated fitness trainers, these athletes compete in:
Aquatics (Swimming & Diving), Rowing, Chess, American Football, Karate, Grappling, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Judo, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Ball Badminton, Air Rifle Shooting, Archery, Weightlifting & Powerlifting, Gymnastics, Yoga, Athletics, Handball, Netball, Squash Rackets, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi and Wrestling.
The university consistently secures several medals annually across State, Zonal, National Inter-University, and Khelo India competitions in multiple sports disciplines, reflecting its sustained commitment to sporting excellence and overall development.

To streamline and optimize the various sports initiatives at Jadavpur University, the Office of the Director of Physical Instruction (Sports Board) has established a comprehensive set of norms. These guidelines are designed to ensure transparency, efficiency, and excellence in managing all sports-related functions, thereby advancing our shared vision of fostering a vigorous sporting culture and promoting holistic development.
1. Sports Quota Admission Guidelines –
For Undergraduate (UG) Level Applicants
General Criteria:
The applicant must have represented a state or its equivalent in any National Championship (Junior, Youth, Senior, Federation Cup & National Games) or a National School Competition (SGFI) or higher.
Alternatively, the student may qualify by securing a first, second, or third position in an individual event, or by being a member of the champion or runners-up team in a team event at an Inter-District or State Championship (open), provided the event is conducted under the aegis of a recognized Federation or Association (MYAS/IOA).
Additionally, the student must meet the percentage of marks or JEE rank specified by the concerned faculty at the qualifying examination for UG courses—including B.Ed, B.P.Ed, and B.Lib.
For Postgraduate (PG) Level Applicants
AIU Zonal and National Competitions:
One qualification route requires achieving at least the 4th place in any team event or the 6th place in any individual event at any Zonal Inter-University competition under the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Alternatively, the applicant may qualify by securing at least the 4th place in a team event or the 8th place in an individual event at any National Inter-University competition conducted under the AIU (refer to www.aiuweb.org).
National Championships:
Candidates who have participated in any recognized National Championship or National Competition-representing their state-organized or recognized by the competent authority of the respective national sports bodies (MYAS/IOA) in the sports and games offered by the AIU may also be eligible, provided they meet the specified percentage of marks or rank fixed by the concerned faculty at the qualifying examination for PG courses (including M.Ed, M.P.Ed, and M.Lib).
Sport-Specific Criteria
Chess:
Boys must have a standard FIDE rating of 1900 or above, and girls must have a rating of 1450 or above. The FIDE ratings will be considered as on the day or week of the publication of the advertisement or from any update beginning January 1 of the current year.
Tennis:
Applicants should possess an AITA ranking up to 300 for under-18 boys/girls or up to 500 for the open category (Men/Women). This ranking criterion applies for both UG and PG levels, based on the ranking available on the day or week of the advertisement or as updated from January 1 of the current year.
Table Tennis & Badminton:
For the Senior category, applicants must have a current Annual All India ranking up to the 96th position for singles and up to the 24th position for doubles. For the Junior category (Men/Women), a ranking up to the 48th position for singles is required. These rankings will be evaluated as per the records on the day or week of advertisement publication or any subsequent update beginning from January 1 of the current year.
Cricket & Football:
Applicants must have represented a 1st Division Club (or higher) with participation in at least 30% of matches, or a 2nd Division Club (or higher) with a minimum of 60% match participation. Eligible representations can be from the current year or any of the three preceding years organized by CAB, IFA, or any State Association.
For both UG and PG admissions, such sports representations must have occurred within the current year or within one of the two preceding calendar years (commencing January 1).
2. Academic Relaxation –
Faculty of Arts: Up to 20% academic relaxation in aggregate is provided in the relevant subjects.
Faculty of Science: An average relaxation of 56.25% is granted, corresponding to a relaxation of up to 19%.
Faculty of Engineering & Technology: Applicants benefit from a relaxation in the WBJEE General Merit Rank (GMR) up to 40,000. This includes a relaxation of 45% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, along with 30% in English.
3. Placement Provisions for Meritorious Sportspersons –
The Office of the Director of Physical Instruction (Sports Board) actively endorses meritorious sportspersons who have represented Jadavpur University in any AIU-recognized sports or games. This endorsement facilitates their placement and employment opportunities across various grades of service within the State Government, Central Government, and other private sector institutions.
4. Sports Awards (Blue Certificate, Blazer, & Memento) –
Blue Certificate: Awarded to students who have represented the University in Zonal, Inter-Zonal, or All India Inter-University competitions under the auspices of the AIU.
Blazer: Conferred on medal-winning students or teams who secure 1st, 2nd, or 3rd positions in AIU National Inter-University Sports Competitions (individual events). Team events in competitions where a direct All India Inter-University format is conducted, or for members of Champion or Runners-Up teams in AIU Zonal Inter-University Sports Competitions.
Memento: Presented to students winning medals in individual or team events at Zonal, Inter-Zonal, and All India Inter-University competitions.
5. Sports Fellowship (Special Award) –
The Sports Fellowship is a special award presented during the Sports Inspiration Programme to medal-winning student players or teams at the AIU National University Sports Championship (both All India and Inter-Zonal competitions).
Gold Medal: Fellowship amounts range from Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 20,000.
Silver Medal: Fellowship amounts range from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 12,000.
Bronze Medal: Fellowship amounts range from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 10,000.
The exact fellowship amount is determined based on the number of players or team members participating in the event as details given below:

Every alternate year, the Sports Board organizes the Sports Inspiration Program—referred to as the Sports Convocation—to recognize and motivate student participants for their outstanding achievements in inter-university sports and games.
Awards & Recognition: Distribution of the Blue Certificate, Blazer, Memento, and Sports Fellowship to deserving recipients.
Inspiration: The university invites renowned sports legends from various disciplines to address the gathering, thereby inspiring and nurturing future generations of athletes.
This convocation not only celebrates the achievements of the individual and team participants but also strengthens the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence within the university community.
The objective of these awards are to recognize the student who accumulates the highest performance points by representing the university in sports and games.
Criteria: Applies to competitions at various levels including AIU Zonal, Inter-Zonal, All India Inter-University (National University Games), Khelo India University Games, and World University Games. The award is presented annually on the day of the University’s Annual Convocation.
The aim is to uncover and nurture emerging athletic talent by encouraging deserving students to participate in inter-university sports events.
Scope of Team & Individual Sports & Games: Chess, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Table Tennis, Squash Rackets, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Badminton, Ball Badminton, Athletics, Taekwondo, Kick Boxing, Boxing, Wrestling, Air Rifle Shooting, Aquatics (Swimming & Diving), Rowing, Weight & Powerlifting, Gymnastics, Yoga, Handball, American Football, Netball, Karate, Grappling, Archery, and Judo. Students are participated at Zonal, Inter-Zonal, All India, Khelo India, and World University levels. The university supports participation through a dedicated sports coaching program covering approximately 30 indoor and outdoor events under the guidance of experienced part-time coaches and fitness trainers.
Athletes or teams that win the Gold medal, rank first, or are members of the Champion team in Inter-Zonal or All India Inter-University tournaments under the aegis of AIU are given a golden opportunity to advance to the World University Games.
The top eight players in individual events and the top sixteen teams in team events, as determined by AIU, are nominated to participate in the Khelo India University Games.
– Organization of Annual Sports meets, Inter-Hostel, Inter-Department, and Inter-Faculty competitions.
– Celebration of national events such as Independence Day/Week, National Sports Day, and International Day of Yoga through sporting activities and webinars.
Additional Initiatives like provision for various invitational and friendly matches as well as mass awareness rallies held on campus. A dedicated Karate coaching program to promote self-defense, alongside a Multi-Gym and Fitness training program and a new facility of Women’s Gym & Fitness Centre for women available year-round for all students.
